Xi Jinping’s Corruption Quagmire

Andrew Wedeman
Professor of Political Science
Georgia State University

When Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, he vowed to “swat flies” (rank and file functionaries) and “hunt tigers” (senior officials) and redouble the party’s long-running war on corruption. A decade later in 2024, Xi’s investigators detained 58 tigers – 16 more than they “bagged” during the first year of the “tiger hunt.” It now appears that he has failed to make significant inroads against widespread
corruption and is not winning the party’s battle against the “cancer of corruption.” Professor Wedeman thus argues that while Xi may have eliminated would-be rivals in the core leadership, he has failed to consolidate his grip on China’s sprawling party-state.
